The Family Table

It’s official, our financing is approved and we’ll be moving into our new house on Oct 1st!  So now the process of packing and cleaning this house begins.  Fortunately for us, our friends and family have generously equipped us with all the kitchen supplies and furnishings a house could ever need.  I have to say, getting married around the same time that you buy your first house is a smart move, literally!  The shower gifts and wedding gifts really came at the perfect time (even though we had told people we didn’t want anything, people never listen!)  But there is one thing we will need in our new home and it’s probably one of the most important and central pieces of furniture in any home, that’s right, we’re missing a dining room table and chairs.  (The one we use now belongs with the house we’re renting)

The family table is arguably the most prominent and symbolic of all the furniture in a family’s home.  It’s the place where Kelly and I will sit down to eat a romantic candle lit dinner on our first wedding anniversary and many more there after.  It’s where our children will blow out the candles on their first birthday cakes and where they’ll inevitably colour a little outside the lines and leave crayon lines for mom and dad to scrub from the wood.  This table is where we’ll gather as a family, plan our future and talk about the changes this world needs and ways we can influence it.  In my mind it’s the cornerstone of the home Kelly and I are getting ready to build together as we eagerly await the addition of kids to our family.

So what will this table look like?  We’ve been shopping a lot already and have looked at practically every furniture store within a 75km radius with virtually zero success.  It seems like anything that costs less than $2,000 looks and feels like it’s going to fall apart within a month, and is almost guaranteed to not be made of real wood.  So we’re still hoping to find a real bargain somewhere, and in the meanwhile as we continue our search I cannot help but send my imagination into the future and picture our family sitting around that table, adding another high chair or booster seat as our family grows with each new baby.  I can’t wait.
